Bird and Flower Market

The Bird and Flower Market was originally located on Jiangyin Road. But Shanghai Municipal Government decided to move the big marketplace to 18 - 28 Huangjiaque Road in Huangpu District in 2001. The newly opened Bird and Flower Market would be much larger than the old one and much cleaner and tidier too.

Before the move, Jiangyin Road Bird and Flower had about 400 stalls that sold lots kinds of beautiful flowers, birds for appreciation, ornamental fishes and useful materials and tools for plants. It had opened in September 1979 and been much welcomed by Shanghai people. It was an ideal place for leisure and locals to take their loved one choosing their favorite goodies. Its variety of products was sold with budget price that attracted many customers at home and abroad, so the market had been expanded much during its history. According to a survey conducted in 1998, Jiangyin Road Bird and Flower Market had a total turnover about 40 million RMB Yuan in that year. The monthly consumption of bird food had amounted to 5 tons. But the hygiene condition was not good at that time and the noise, smell and odor could be a nuisance to residents who were living there. Nowadays Jiangyin Road has been renewed to a street that is a passing through route between North Huangpi Road and North Chongqing Road.
