Chiang Kai-shek

Chiang Kai-shek (Oct. 31, 1887---April 5, 1975) was one of the greatest politicians and national leaders in modern China. Before 1949, he was the top leader of Kuomintang, the ruling party of that time.

Chiang Kai-shek mastered the Kuomintang (KMT) after the pass-away of Sun Yat-sen in 1925 and from 1928 until his death in 1975; he acted as top leader of the China’s national government of the Republic of China (ROC). In 1928, Chiang Kai-shek led troops to fight against the local warlords in the Northern Expedition cooperating with China’s Communist Party with the help of the Soviet Union and late Sun Yat-sen to unify China and end the Warlord era. But later, He wanted to eliminate China Communist Party and forced China Communist Party to take uprising for turning against his wrongdoings. This uprising happened in Nanchang (currently the provincial capital of Jiangxi Province) masterminded by Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Lin Biao as well as Ye Ting and so on. Chinese Communist Party turned be strong as an independent Chinese party in political community. This party also had the awareness of getting the regime via force and guns which to some extent weakened Chiang Kai-shek authority in China. During the period of second Sino-Japanese war, he took the principle of keeping domestic unification firstly and then focusing on Anti-Japanese war. In 1936, the Xi’an Incident happened. Chiang Kai-shek was kidnapped by his two subordinations, Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng. With the all-out help of China Communist Party, this crisis was peacefully settled.

Chiang Kai-shek made his best efforts to fight against Nazi Japanese inhumane invasion (holocaust in Nanjing was the biggest inhumane event in Human History). He also actively tried to get the international support. He sent Hu Shi(a famous academic learner in China) to be the Chinese ambassador in America). Chinese education developed very well at this hard time. His international prominence grew during this time as well. After the World War Two, He wanted to eradicate the Communist Party in China and lauched the Civil war, but he failed at last and had to flee to Taiwan.
