Germans in Old Shanghai

Previously, the Germans who lived in Shanghai established passionate, intact and organized association activities; they had their own schools as well as newspaper. But Germans’ well-regulated life has been changed because of the First World War. They were treated as unpopular people by other foreigners living in China; they were expelled by all the foreign clubs, even the municipal government banished them.

On the street of Shanghai, interesting scenes of “cold war” presented often. At midday, British merchant and Germany businessman went to have lunch simultaneously, they met on the street of Bund, but they treated each other as an invisible man, even didn’t greet each other with a nod of the head. Holding their heads high, both of them just walked up to their own club directly. The main topic they talked during the lunch time was about war for sure. A large analytical diagram of war situation was hanging on the wall of each club, certainly arrowhead of both side was pointing to the opposite.
This kind of situation has been the past already, nowadays, all the foreigners from all over the world is welcomed in China in Shanghai, and they are living in a harmonious atmosphere.
