Hengshan Road

Hengshan Road was reopened to pedestrians and vehicles use in 1992. Originally it was called Petain Avenue during the pre-war French Concession period, and the present name was given in 1943. Hengshan Road is being linked to the ever-prosperous Xujiahui Business Area of southwest Shanghai to the south and posh shopping Huaihai Road to the north. Hengshan Road is seen to be much tranquiller than its surrounding streets, chinar trees are quite densely planted along the pedestrian paths, with beautiful, villa-like European-style buildings. All these things can make you feel you are on a pretty and romantic boulevard in a Western country.

Do not be cheated by the tranquil ambience of Hengshan Road, it is much easier to be reached than some people think. There is a direct access to the scenic street by Shanghai's Metro Line 1. The identically beautiful Xujiahui Park is just around the corner !

Hengshan Road is quite an ideal place for searching your favorite CDs, DVDs, books and fine arts. A bowling stadium here may be a great place for your leisure. Food lovers may sample the exotic tastes from all over the world here, good quality restaurants and bars are available. The former building of the Pathe Record Company is on 811 Hengshan Road, built in 1921 of French style and masonry structure. Nowadays the house has become a coffee bar and restaurant - La Villa Rouge. In the year 2005 the building has been listed as Heritage Architecture by Shanghai Municipal Government. Entering the restaurant, you will see an old talking machine placed on the table of the vestibule which is bas-relieved with the copper image of Pathe office building. In the dining hall on the left, there is a white fireplace and a big picture of a jazz quartet on the wall just right of it. The seats here are of leather made, very comfortable. The wooden tables give you a nostalgic feeling.
