Jews and Education of Shanghai

In the late period of the 19th century, there was no independent Jewish school created by Jews due to the few population of Jews in Shanghai when the establishment of Shanghai Jews organizations. Therefore the parents of Jewish children used to send their children to the British schools, French public schools and other schools created by British, French and other Authorities in their Concessions of Shanghai. Some big families of Jewish Businessmen like Sassoon family used to employ the private teachers to keep their children receiving the better educations. However, as the increase of organization numbers, establishing more schools to meet the demand of Jewish children’s education was proposed. In 1900, Jewish rich businessmen Abraham and Solomon both donated much money to build up a Jewish school in a newly-established church, which is the original one of the Shanghai Jewish School.

 

In the early period of 1940s, because a large number of Jewish children of Jewish refugees from mid-Europe needed to go to school, a well-known Jewish family established Shanghai School of Jewish Youth Christian Association in Refugee Camps to solve the problems of schooling. In 1942, this school was moved to East Yu-Hang Road, the new school was considered as the most beautiful architectures in Hongkou District. Afterwards, this school gradually became the one cultural center of Jewish Refugees. 

Some Jewish businessmen also helped the Chinese to set up schools other than building their own schools only for Jewish people. In 1902, a famous Jewish person set up a private school called Yucai School. The major subjects include Chinese and English, and these subjects opened mainly for cultivating the translators or interpreters for foreign banks, factories and some special sectors in concessions. In 1912, the Yucai School was moved to another site and totally managed by Gongbu sector. This school was the original of the current Yucai School. Besides, many Jews in Shanghai were employed as professors by Shanghai St. John University, Zhengdan University, Shanghai State-run Medical College, State-run Music College and Hujiang University and so on. 

Some famous Jewish artists also opened some professional training schools. They taught classic dancing, acrobatics, folk songs and so on. Especially their ballroom dancing, physical jerks and Children ballet are most welcomed in Shanghai. One of Chinese famous pianist, Fu Cong (son of Chinese famous writer and translator Fu Lei) was also specially trained by a Jewish famous pianist.
