Lu Xun

Lu XunLu Xun is a famed and great writer, ideologist and revolutionist of modern China. He was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang in 1881, and his former name is Zhou Shuren, character Yucai (Henan talented). In 1902, he went to Japan for his further education; the initial major was medicine, latter he changed it for the literary and artistic work, attempted to effect people’s national spirit.

In 1918 published vernacular fiction "Diary of a Madman", at that time he began to use the pen name of Lu Xun, and this novel has established the cornerstone of new literature movement. Around May fourth movement, he became an editor of “New Youth” magazine, contributed so much to the “May fourth” new literature movement. He devoted himself entirely to the Chinese liberation career, and wrote many works which had the most sober realistic spirit. On October 19, 1936 he died of illness in Shanghai. In 1956, the Party and government moved and reconstructed Lu Xun’s sepulcher in Shanghai. Chair Mao presented inscription personally: Lu Xun was an immortal monument of Chinese literature; he used his pen as a sharp knife, directing at the enemy’s heart.

In order to commemorate Lu Xun, the Lu Xun Park was established in Shanghai, it is located right behind Hongkou Stadium in Hongkou district. It is one of the largest parks in northern downtown Shanghai. There is a museum in Lu Xun Park; it is the place for exhibiting Lu Xun’s manuscripts, some of his personal stuff, documents and photos.

Lu Xun Park is an optimum place for you to know about Lu Xun’s brilliant life, it also provides an opportunity to experience a peculiar Shanghainese way of life, crowds of residents are singing traditional songs, painting, writing calligraphy, others are watching people playing cards, strolling or playing sports, especially at weekends.
