Lunar-Calendar Spring Festival

In late 1930, the central government of the Republic China in Nanjing released a command to abolish the Spring Festival. The content was like this: in 1912, the Republic of China had abolished the traditional Lunar Calendar and adopted the Gregorian Calendar as the national calendar for nationwide use. From now on, the spring festival would be abolished. The decree prescribed the New-year rest-day was from January 1 to January 4. All the custom and traditional programs should be enforced during these four days. The time of sectors and companies for Spring-Festival break was longer than 4 days would be moved forward. However the suspension of business would be prohibited during the Spring-Festival holiday. All the rites of the Spring Festival would be moved ahead of the traditional Spring-Festival time in Lunar Calendar. On December 15, the Spring-sweeping was done. On December 31, it was the Spring-festival Eve and for Night Family Feast for celebrating the coming of Spring Festival. On 1 January, it was the first day of the New Year, and the spring banquet would be available. On 15 January, it was the Lantern Festival.

To guarantee the implementation of the laws, the government ordered the newspaper offices to maximally publicize this law. The local sectors, offices and schools also thoroughly followed it. Besides, the provincial or city Educational Bureau and Public-Security Bureau took many measures to carry out the law. The specific methods they used like Press prohibition, publishing prohibition and selling prohibition on the old calendar-book and the forbiddance of the newspapers and magazines with the additional content on old-style calendar. The winter-holiday schedule in schools was also altered in accordance with the new calendar. For this, Shanghai authorities intentionally issued millions of new-style calendars and new spring-festival scrolls and the district governmental sectors dispatched them. There was a slogan of leading a revolutionary New Year and the governmental officials and members should exemplified themselves in the enforcement to others, otherwise they would be criticized and punished.
 
On 28 December, the massive meeting for national-calendar promotion was held in Shanghai, the authoritative people for revolution and the leader of the academia like Cai Yuanpei who released the speech entitled “National Calendar is far better than the Lunar one, all walks of life should thoroughly implement it ” . After the issuing of the law, the implementation was largely done all the nation. But the long-standing convention is impossibly abolished via a paper order. In folk community, the resistance is strongly and the local officials are also playing at this.
