According to the record which was provided by the jails in International Settlement region and France Settlement region, Portuguese’s crime rate was the lowest among all foreigners’ record in Shanghai.

The most important reason for it was almost every Portuguese in Shanghai was pious Catholic. Special place only for Portuguese existed in Hongkou Catholic Church; copper frames were nailed on the wall of the special place, the names of one’s family were written inside the frames. Portuguese also established various charity organizations. These charity organizations helped large number of refugees from Byelorussia to tide over miserable life since 1918.

Though the economic power of Portuguese businessmen was not as strong as the merchant from other countries such as British businessmen, they were so active in the Universal Commercial Group which established in International Settlement region in 1853, they were interested in many kinds of activities, especially the art and sports. They owned an excellent orchestra; they chose the Portuguese guitar with distinctive Portugal character as the main instrument, this style of music was loved by soldiers so much. Later, they organized another brass band which enjoyed admiration from other band successfully based on the orchestra. At that time, among all the bund which could play during marching, it was on a par with Scotland organ band and Chinese folk music band. 

In 1910, Portuguese erected the second formal cinema, that is, Ai Pulu cinema. Located at the North Sichun Road, this cinema shown a large number of French films. Besides, new world amusement park was set up on Jingan Temple Road by Portuguese.
