Jews always pay more attention to education or schooling. In the early 1910s in Shanghai, there was a Jewish school exclusively for Jewish Children. The number of the students was generally kept around 250. As the European Jewish refugees’ coming, the schools could not meet the demands any more.
For solving the education problem of Jewish children, another school called Shanghai Jewish Y.M.C.A School established in Hongkou District for those Jewish refugees’ children. The number of Jewish students was over 600. With the help of one famous person, in 1942, this school removed to East Youheng Road. The new school buildings were considered to be the most beautiful architecture in Hongkou District, afterward, it gradually became one cultural center of Jewish refugees.
The removed Shanghai Jewish Y.M.C.A School had a good influence in education. It used the subject setting of ordinary education and made out the curriculum schedule following the European standard. The students are entitled to attend the senor Cambridge examination and some students could be recommended for admission to American schools. At the same time, Fella-zinger Jewish School was also established in 1941 by German Jewish Educator. There were only 4 teachers in this school but they were able to put most of the graduates into the universities.
These two schools have a common feature that they focused on technological and occupational trainings. In it, the most highlighted organization was ORT. This organization was managed by a Polish man. The main intention of this organization was for the need of Jews after the Second World War. Up to the end of the Second World War, there were 2,200 people totally received the occupational training.
Kell-Pasqual was one the most famous artists among the Jewish refugees in Shanghai. In 1939, this world-famous artist came to Shanghai as a Jewish refugee. He opened a dancing school and later he was famous as a dancing teacher, and many Shanghai residents sent their children to his school. Many his students later became the famous artists in Shanghai.
