The main building of Shanghai Exhibition center was established in 1955. It was the earliest exhibition site in Shanghai after People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949. In the past 49 years, many important political events took place here. Communist Party’s three leaders in different times, more than ten foreign national leaders and governmental leaders were visited here. Hundreds of grand exhibitions at home and abroad were hosted here. Nowadays, it is the main conference center in Shanghai and famous exhibition sites for overseas exchanges.

In 2001, a large reconstruction for main buildings of Shanghai Exhibition Center was done. After that, the whole architectural appearance is more charming with friendlier environment, larger exhibition space, more all-round functions and more dependable equipments. The southern side of Shanghai Exhibition Center is comprised of ranked hall, central grand hall, east No.1 hall, west No.1 hall and west No.2 hall. The north side was composed of Friendship Hall and reconstructed East No.2 Hall. These two halls are made for meeting. These two sides are interdependent and forming the features of southern exhibition and northern meetings.

Shanghai Exhibition center is located in the prosperous area of Jingan District. It is near to West Nanjing Road in north and Mid-Yanan Road in south. It is advantageous in geographic aspect. Bird’s eye view of Shanghai Exhibition Center, it seems like a flying plane. Shanghai Exhibition Center covers 9.3000 square meters with the 8,000-square-meter architectural square. There are 42 all-around functional halls and over 100 meeting rooms. The overall coverage is comprised of the offices, cinemas and banqueting hall and coffee house. In the big-yard, there was a 15,000-sqaure-meter plaza and 15,000-sqaure-meter garden and greenbelt.
