Shanghai First People’s Hospital, now named Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated First People’s Hospital (a church hospital). It is a leading comprehensive hospital that integrates clinical performance, medical teaching, scientific research and prophylaxis as a whole. In 1999, the hospital was elected one of the “National One Hundred Excellent Hospitals”.

It has attached importance to scientific research and teaching to develop hospital and been a teaching base of Shanghai Medical University since 1950s. In May 1997, it became a clinic teaching hospital of Shanghai First Medical University and an affiliated hospital to Fudan University after Shanghai First Medical University merged into Fudan University. In 2002, the hospital became an affiliated hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. There are 12 doctorate degree training and 23 master’s degree training stations with 22 doctorate degree and 34 master degree tutors.

Since 1990s the hospital has been developing excellently in the field of medicine, teaching and scientific research, but after entering the new century, as to the limited area of the hospital on Wujing Road, it is difficult for the hospital to sustainable development. After several investigations and discussion, with the experts’ expound and prove, the municipal government and Shanghai Health Bureau has approved to set up a new hospital in Song Jiang District that will be designed for the new century and as a modernized, garden-like and symbolized hospital. The new hospital will become a comprehensive medical center in the western part of Shanghai with a function of medicine, teaching and University Affiliated First People’s Song Jiang New Hospital, which is designed to cover 27 hectares and will be completed in two stages. The construction area of the first stage will cover 80,000 sq. m with the investment of RMB 400 millions.

Backing on the strength of teaching and scientific research of the well-known university, the hospital with a hundred years history will enter into a brand-new developing stage.
