Shanghai Jewish Tablet

In Huoshan Park on Huoshan Road of Shanghai, there is a monument with the inscription “The Residence of Jewish Refugees’ Residence”. There is also a paragraph of words to narrate the conditions at that time: During the Second World War, thousands of Jews came to shanghai to avoid the killing of fascist and the illicit authorities of Japan in Shanghai set up the Jewish segregation zone to restrict the jews’ acts due to their lack of nationality. The area extends to Gongping Road in the west, Tongbei Road in the east, Huimin Road in the south and Zhoujiazui Road in the north.

The depiction of the monument reflected a part of unique history happened in Shanghai: when nearly all the countries closed their moral door to those disastrous and miserable Jews, Shanghai always kept its door open to welcome those tragic refugees although it was also suffering the dehumanized invasion from evil Japan. There were nearly 30,000 Jews came to Shanghai from East Europe and West Europe from 1933 to 1941. Shanghai at that time undoubtedly was the Noah’s Ark to save these unfortunate people.
