Shanghai Worker’s Cultural Palace

Shanghai worker’s cultural palace is located in the central area of People’s Square of Shanghai. It is as famous as Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai Urban Planning Museum in People’s square. It is also one of the popular leisure centers among the Shanghai workers. Shanghai worker’s cultural palace was founded in 1950. The late Shanghai Mayor, Chen Yi, participated into opening ceremony and inscribed the horizontal plaque. It means this is the school and fairyland of workers, which gradually became the principle and direction of development of China’s worker’s cultural palaces.

It covers total area of 2591 square meters and the architectural area is 15824 square meters. It is a post-modernism building. In 1992, it was firstly listed as the excellent protection buildings in modern Shanghai. Since its establishment, it kept the principle of workers’ school and fairyland, severed as the base for extension of socialistic advanced culture and massive workers’ life and study. It prospers the workers’ life and provides a base for workers’ cultural exchange.

In 1997, Shanghai worker’s cultural palace was praised as the national model of workers cultural palaces. The filmmaking and dramas created by Shanghai worker’s cultural palace have been winning the Wenhua Award and other state-level awards for many times. It is also listed as the civilized and advanced sectors by Shanghai Municipal Government. In 2003, it is named as the model base for national workers’ cultural improvement.

Shanghai worker’s cultural palace is a large non-profit sector. It has 122 staffs. It is comprised of literary-artistic creation, cultural exchange, art action, library, cultural presentation, educational training, filmmaking, exhibition performance; worker’s literary and sports association as well as the workers art and sport lovers’ cooperation.
