The Ancestral Temple

The ancestral temple was built in 1294 and the current site chosen in 1855. It occupies an area of 1.13 hectare. Now the temple is located on 215 Wenmiao Road, which is inside of the West Gate of the Old City section of Shanghai. The first purpose of this temple is to worship and for memory Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC), the great ancient Chinese educator and philosopher, as well as other famous representatives of Confucian culture, therefore it has been called Confucian Temple or Master Temple (Fuzimiao). Historically, the temple has always been a local highest learning institution and educational administration bureau. It has once been used as Chinese imperial examination place in Shanghai.

Nowadays the Shanghai Confucian Temple is one of the key cultural protection sites in Shanghai and high school students and their parents like to come here to pray in order to attain higher grade in local public examination. In addition to the majestic halls and magnificent tablets, a tea house and a book market are very interesting place to visit too. Although it has a long and glorious history, many parts of the temple have been moved from other places or rebuilt. It is an important part of Shanghai's history.
