The most charming attractions in Shanghai’s suburb must be the “Nine Peaks Mountain, Mao Lake surround by clouds”. Roaming through the landscape of Nine Peaks Mountain, there is a scenic spot you can’t miss, that is, Huzhu Pagoda which enjoys high reputation in Virginia Bright Leaf, moreover, you should pay more attention to the legend of “two peculiarities” about the pagoda, because they’re really wonderful and magical.

Huzhu Pagoda was built of brick and wood structure in 1079(the 2nd year of Yuan Feng period in the Northern Song Dynasty). Standing on the middle peak of the Tianma Mountain in Songjiang County, the pagoda of an octagonal construction was very splendid once. Unfortunately, in 1788(the 53rd of QianLong of the Qing Dynasty), the wood structure was damaged by a fire caused by firecrackers which was burned for the Buddhist ceremony in a temple fair, only the brick structure remained. Rumor had it that there were hidden treasures in this pagoda, even including a She li(Buddhist relics) pearl ;so many people came here and torn down the bricks for finding the treasures. As a result, Huzhu Pagoda began to lean in the late 1800s. It is now leaning toward southeast at an angle of 6゜53', which is 1゜23' more in obliquity than the world famous leaning tower Pisa in Italy. This is the first peculiarity of Huzhu Pagoda, and it’s also called the Leaning Pagoda because of this peculiarity.

The second peculiarity is the Virginia Bright Leaf. There are three mountains which are famous for the Virginia Bright Leaf: Emei Mount, Huangshan Mount and Tianma Mountain. The mysterious Tianma Mountain has two kinds of Virginia Bright Leaf. One is “the rainbow after rain”. In the early of morning or at sunset, sunlight penetrates the cloud layer which is accompanied with vapor, at the same time; a colorful aureole appears beside Huzhu Pagoda. Another one is “hundreds of pagodas coming to pilgrimage”. Whenever fog comes, shadows of the pagoda show up by the way of overlapping, the shadows gather around Huzhu Pagoda. This phenomenon called mirage, and it’s very spectacular actually.
