Their Voices of Spring Waltz in Winter

In 1930s, Shanghai was the only mega-city in the world that people could enter without any visa or permit. Nearly 30,000 Jewish refugees flooded into Shanghai. They led a hard life in Shanghai, and always suffered from the persecution from illicit authority of Shanghai and illness. But all of these never stripped them of preference and happiness from their root. In legend, the prisoners of Babylon experienced the hard time via their strong will and resilience. They always focused on the education and schooling, referred to read, played the famous chef-d'oeuvre and held their own sport games. At that hard time, the Jews created a life miracle in Shanghai!

The blooming art acts of Shanghai Jews were flowering after European Jewish people flooded into Shanghai. There were many artists in these refugees. At that time, they felt they had the responsibility for enhancing the confidence of Jewish people and meanwhile strengthening their own confidence. These Jewish artists from mid-Europe organized diversity of art associations such as the Association of European Jewish Artists, the association of Shanghai Musicians and the association of Jewish painters and art-lovers and so on. These professional groups united the Jewish artists to perform their skills, hold their painting display and improve their welfare.

Many musicians of them in 1939 held their own concert in Jews headquarters and Pao-mating hall. In the same year, some artists also performed their skills in Lan-xin Grand Theater, the top-class performance place in Shanghai. They performed the Viennese operette, 'Die Fledermaus'. According to the statistics, Jewish people totally performed over 60 plays. In winter of 1943, the renowned Association of Shanghai Musician organized a large-scale donation performance in Donghai Grand Theater with the help of the relieving institution of Jewish refugee in Shanghai. At that hard time this performance indeed brought the Jewish refugees much warmth and comfort.

After the segregation zone established, the Jewish artists were not mastered by the bad conditions. They follow the routines to hold the concert each month. The popular western-style but common building on Huoshan Road (the original Dongshan Grand Theater) harmonized with those high-level theaters that playing the classical music and operas was the most welcome among those Jewish refugees. The façade of the building has three big western-style window traceries. The Jewish refugees rented the top floor and matched it with arbor, chairs, flowers and grasses. This floor finally became the decent Mascot Roof Garden. The artists of Jewish refugees played thr folk music, pop-music, dancing and singing performance. On vacations, the top floor was crowded and popular. It is said that a Miss Shanghai Contest was once held here.
