West Carriage & Rickshaw

As the increase of foreign residents in Shanghai, diversities of western-style carriages appeared. The double-wheel carriages, four-wheel carriages, one-horse carriages and two-horse carriages were largely used. These carriages had the diversified shapes for rainy and sunny days. The decoration in carriages was extremely delicate. In winter, the green-wool curtain, cupronickel cuspidor, shining mirror, vase with silk artificial flower, fox-fur cotton-padded mattress on the seats and the cupronickel hand-warmer and foot-warmer were all available in carriages. The owner of carriage was great, and the wagoner was also uncommon. All the equipments are attainable. The costumes were tailor-made. In summer, the owners wore the gauze clothes and cool hats. In winter, they wore leather overcoat with amice.

At sundown, on the road from Nanjing Road to the area of Jing’an Temple, many carriages went out for excursion and swaggered along the streets. At that time, the recreation grounds were mostly centralized on the Fuzhou Road; naturally, it was also the center of the carriages. Someone intentionally made a pot of tea and sat beside the window to view the coming-and-going carriages. In fact, it is un-meaningful to focus on the carriage but the good-looking women and handsome men. Afterwards, some local rich men made some more luxurious and beautiful carriages than those foreign ones. But there was a rule in concessions that the Chinese carriage would be forbidden to exceed those foregoing foreigner’s carriage.

Additionally, as for the Japanese carriage, in 1874, a Frenchman called Mylla introduced the jinriksha from Japan. Mylla got the license from the authority of concession and employed Japanese as the wagoner, but the Japanese was unfamiliar to Shanghai traffic system, hence the wagoner was changed to be the local people. The Jinriksha was painted to be yellow for attraction, so it is also called rickshaw. In the early period, the rickshaw was high and wide. The wheel was also changed for the modern rubber wheel, so it is not so noisy but more speedy. It was cheaper than the western-style carriage and more controllable than the western-style carriage, gradually it replaced the western-style carriage to be the major vehicle in Shanghai.

In 1910s, in Shanghai public concession, one rickshaw was available among five people and one rickshaw between two people in French Concession. Many businessmen and celebrities preferred to take the rickshaw. During the time from 1920s to 1930s, its number was far larger than that of automobiles. During the second Sino-Japanese War (1931-1945), many refugees lived on it!
